Powerful... heartwarming... inspirational. That's how I would describe what I'm witnessing with Sammie, her service dog, Leias, and their new friend, Alex.
Alex is the young woman who will be helped by Sammie's dog after she leaves this world. Sadly, that could happen at any time.
In the last week, she has stopped her medications and is resting as her heart fails from her battle with COPD.
She prepared for this time by reaching out to us to help find a new human for her beloved helper to assist after she's gone, but she wanted to meet this person to make sure it was the right fit.
Watch the video on this page to see how she told Alex it was official. Grab a tissue... it was joyous and emotional.

There was another surprise waiting for Alex during their meeting on Sunday. Along with a framed picture, there was also a personal note Sammie wrote for her and it's from the dog's perspective:
Leias' original trainer, Paul Anthony, was there with everyone for the meet-and-greet. He helped Sammie and Leias get acquainted several years ago, now he's helping with the next transition.
It's something he's never like this before. Sammie's amazing selflessness will be remembered long after she's gone.
With Paul's help, we're planning to establish a program we're calling "Sammie's Wish", that helps others in need have access to service dogs.
