Fruits, veggies disappearing from American diets: Study

(KMOX) - Eat your fruits and vegetables. It's advice we've been getting all our lives, and yet, Americans are eating fewer fruits and veggies than ever according to a new study.

"We are in the midst of a fruit and vegetable consumption crisis in our country," says Wendy Reinhardt Kapsak, president and CEO of The Produce for a Better Life Foundation based in Brentwood. According to their State of the Plate study, vegetable intake has decreased in five out of eight age groups, with adults 50+ leading the way.

"Our consumption of fruits and vegetables is actually eroding and it’s almost to the point where it falls off our plate entirely," says Kapsak.

Only 1 in 10 Americans are getting the recommended amount each day. Most Americans are eating vegetables once a day, and fruit is even less than that.

She recommends putting fruit and veggies first, with these tips:
- While making dinner, cut up some fruit or vegetables and put them out on the table for the kids to snack on
- Add fruits to your hot or cold cereals, vegetables to your omelet or frittata
- Put extra veggies on your sandwich or burger
- Find little ways to increase the amount you eat.

Kapsak says the nation is in the grips of an obesity crisis at the same time consumption of healthy fruits and veggies is declining. A plant-based diet, she believes, is the key to happier, healthier people.
