Beam up another “Star Trek” sequel, Scotty!

Paramount is readying to start production on a fourth movie in the ongoing “Star Trek” film franchise, according to Variety.
J.J. Abrams, who directed the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot and its 2013 sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness,” announced the news at the Paramount Investors Day presentation and also disclosed the original cast would be back to board the USS Enterprise.
"We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you've just never seen before," Abrams said. "We're thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we're talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can't wait for you to see what we're cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper."
The studio is set to begin negotiations with Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), John Cho (Sulu), Karl Urban (Bones), and Simon Pegg (Scotty) to reprise their roles.
The six actors previously appeared as the classic characters in the last three “Star Trek” films, most recently in Justin Lin’s “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016.
Anton Yelchin, who played Chekhov, passed away in 2016.
Abrams will produce the 4th film with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) taking over the directing.
The original television series, starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and Nichelle Nichols, premiered in 1966 and aired for three seasons on NBC.
Prior to Abrams’ 2009 reboot, there have been 10 films in the franchise released in theaters.
Currently, fans can enjoy two television series in the “Star Trek” universe. “Star Trek: Picard'' and “Star Trek: Discovery'' are both available to stream on Paramount+.
