Henrico Humane Society (HHS) will hold its Bark in the Park Dog Walk on Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Short Pump Park, 3329 Pump Rd, Henrico, VA 23233. This event is a fundraising dog walk that supports animals in the care of Henrico Humane Society.

“Bark in the Park is a great way to get some exercise, socialize your dog and support Henrico Humane Society’s mission to rescue dogs and cats from across Central Virginia and place them in loving, forever homes,” Melissa Golden, volunteer manager and event organizer, said. “Our goal is to raise $15,000 through the dog walk and fundraising efforts of individual supporters raising money on their own,” Golden said. “Proceeds from the event will offset the cost of expensive medical care or behavior rehabilitation for the animals we rescue that are sick or have been neglected.”

Bark in the Park is literally a ‘walk in the park’ and is a fun event for the entire family! The event kicks off at 10:00 a.m. and the 2K (1 ¼ miles) dog walk starts at 10:45 a.m. Other activities include local vendors, dog contests, face-painting and inflatables for children, food vendors and more! Anyone who has adopted a pet from Henrico Humane Society is encouraged to participate in the alumni parade. A complete list of program events can be seen on Henrico Humane Society’s website, https://www.henricohumane.org/events/barkinthepark.

While the event is free, HHS raises money through the dog walk fee: $15 for one adult registration or $20 for two. Kids 6-12 are $5 and children under 6 and dogs are free. Walkers can register online until September 29 at https://www.henricohumane.org/events/barkinthepark or at the event. Supporters are encouraged to create their own webpage to collect donations from friends and family, which is an easy way to raise funds and support a great cause, regardless of whether they choose to walk or not.

This event is not possible without the support of Henrico County and many local businesses. Platinum level sponsors include Colonial Veterinary Hospital, Holiday Barn Pet Resorts and The Dog Stop.

All pets must be leashed, vaccinated and at least four months old. Retractable leashes are strongly discouraged because they can be dangerous to pets and people around them.
