It's so sad but around 38 kids die every year after being left in hot cars, according to NoHeatStroke.org. Wicker and Wilde found this and wanted to share the story of this one grandmother who has a clever way to make sure she never forgets her young grandson in the backseat. Kristy Wilson has shared her tip in a now-viral TikTok video to help other parents and caregivers.
Wilson’s hack is pretty simple - she drives with only one shoe on and she keeps the other shoe by her grandson’s car seat in the back. “Why am I driving with only one shoe on?” the granny asks in her video. “Because I have my infant grandson in the car with me and I’d rather deal with the hot pavement than leave my grandson in the car, so I leave my shoe in the back.”
And Grandma Wilson actually got some backlash for her helpful hack. Some critics were concerned about the safety of driving barefoot - which is legal - and some call the strategy a crutch of an irresponsible caregiver. One commenter writes, “If you can’t remember you have him in the back then you shouldn’t be watching him at all.” But the thing is, it can happen to anyone and if wearing one shoe prevents even one kid from being left in a hot car, it’s worth spreading the word.
