"The Flying Squirrels open their next homestand Tuesday with a six-game series against league-newcomers, the Somerset Patriots, an affiliate of the New York Yankees. The week features a pair of T-shirt giveaways, two fireworks shows and a unicorn appearance. The homestand is highlighted by Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend, a two-day celebration of the Richmond 34 and social justice advocates on Friday and Saturday.

Fans can purchase tickets online at SquirrelsBaseball.com/Tickets, by phone at 804-359-FUNN (3866) or in person at the Flying Squirrels offices.

On Feb. 22, 1960, 34 Virginia Union University students were arrested following a peaceful sit-in protest at the whites-only lunch counter of Thalhimers department store in downtown Richmond. The "Richmond 34" sit-in ultimately led to the integration of Thalhimers and influenced legislation in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Earlier this year, the Flying Squirrels launched a series of initiatives to celebrate the legacy of the Richmond 34, including Richmond 34 Legacy Weekend presented by Capital One.

The festivities begin Friday with an End Racism T-shirt giveaway to the first 1,000 fans 15 and older (adult XL sizes only) and continues Saturday with a pregame ceremony honoring members of the Richmond 34 followed by postgame fireworks. The Flying Squirrels will also wear specialty Richmond 34 jerseys both Friday and Saturday, which will be auctioned with proceeds benefiting the creation of a Richmond 34 Legacy scholarship fund.
