Summer is almost here - a.k.a. ice cream season - and it turns out, the way you eat your favorite frozen treat can reveal a lot about your personality. You might not think much about how you go about it, but psychologist Jo Hemmings has and she has some ideas about what your method says about you.

Whether you bite, nibble or lick your ice cream, experts say it can reveal a lot about your personality. A new survey of 2-thousand adults finds that 63% prefer to lick theirs, while 39% bite their scoops. But what does that reveal about them? According to Hemmings:

People who go at it with their teeth and bite their ice cream are more “fearless,” “confident” and “impulsive.” She explains, “Biters are very in-the-moment, they are probably extroverts and like instant gratification.”

Those who lick their ice cream tend to be “methodical” and “relaxed,” as they patiently enjoy their scoop. “Lickers prefer delayed gratification,” Hemmings says. “They crave the dopamine hit, the brain’s reward, that they get from extending the eating process.”

As for those who nibble, they’re more likely to be “cautious,” “gentle” and “thoughtful,” but possibly a little controlling at times. “Nibblers are good emotional self-regulators, though they may be prone to anxiety because of their enthusiasm for attention to detail,” the ice cream analyst explains.

Of course, ice cream is never out of season for some folks like Rebecca Wilde, from the Morning Mix with Wicker and Wilde, with 62% of survey respondents admitting they like to eat it no matter how cold it is outside. As for the dreaded brain freeze side effect, 31% say they try to eat their frozen dessert quickly to avoid it. Hemmings has analyzed them, too, commenting, “The ice cream speed-eater is likely to be high-energy, impulsive, enthusiastic and impatient.” (HINT: Rebecca lets hers get slightly melted and soft)

No matter how you like to eat it, or what flavor you like best, enjoy it! Ice cream is known as a comfort food so indulge your sweet tooth today.
