The ancient Oort Cloud Comet came out to play in the night sky on October 12th and it's visible until the end of the month. If this warrants even the slightest interest from you then you must make time to see it because it won't be back in our lifetime. Wicker & Wilde are certainly going to look up this weekend. It's supposed to be clear and beautiful weather through Sunday so it should be a perfect opportunity. The Comet is about 44 million miles away according to NASA.
This is an especially big deal because the comet was only discovered last year so you could be among the first people to witness it firsthand. Look for the comet, officially known as C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, just after sunset. You should be able to see it near the horizon to the west but you'll get the best sight of it in the dark so maybe drive out to the country. It's near the scorpio
Go ahead and borrow your neighbors binoculars and telescope which will give a better view than just looking at it with the naked eye.
NOW, peaking THIS weekend is the Orionid meteor shower. The shower will be most visible between midnight through before dawn, according to EarthSky.org. This happens every year when as the Earth passes through what's left behind by Halley's Comet. The only thing that stinks is the the moon is so full (and don't get us wrong we love full moons, however) that it's brightness might hinder our ability to see the meteor shower in all it's glory. According to AP, there are 2 meteor showers to be seen and if we are able to see them we could witness up to 60 meteors per hour! Either way, it's worth a look up just in case. What a sight to see! Happy stargazing!
