A teen in the foster care system who bonded with her coach is now going to be his daughter. Daniel Donaldson, a youth sports coach in Haleyville, Alabama, met Alecia after coaching her in 2019. After he found out about her foster care experience, he and his wife Tiffany took her in and became her foster parents.
The family always left it up to Alecia to decide if she would like to become legally adopted and after 524 days as their foster daughter, she decided she wanted to make it official. The 14-year-old planned a surprise for Donaldson’s birthday with her request. Alicia, Tiffany and their three other children blindfolded him and lined up a series of signs with the good news.
“This man here started out as just my coach, but he stepped up when he didn’t have to,” one sign reads. “He is now not only my coach, my encourager, my protector, my provider, but now the man I call daddy.” When Donalson read the last sign, he gave his daughter a huge hug, and she says she’ll never forget it because she “felt so happy and safe.”
