Thanksgiving is always a busy holiday for travel and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects this could be the busiest year so far! The TSA expects to screen 18.3-million people during the Thanksgiving travel period between Tuesday, November 26th to Monday, December 2nd.
Of course, with that many people flying to and from their holiday feasts, a lot of them will probably have family favorite foods to bring and leftovers to take home, if they’re lucky. The thing is, while most foods can be carried through TSA checkpoints, some will need to go in checked bags. A good rule of thumb, according to the TSA is: “If you can spill it, spray it, spread it, pump it or pour it, it is a liquid, aerosol or gel and must be packed in your checked bag if it exceeds the 3.4-ounce limit.” Wicker & Wilde did this topic on air today (Nov 21st) so maybe you heard the experiences some of our listeners had with food on a plane. If not, this info should help you if you are planning on taking food on board with you this Thanksgiving or Christmas.
If you’re still not sure whether a food item can be packed in a carry-on or if it needs to be in checked luggage, the TSA’s website and app has a “What can I bring?” feature that lets you to type in the item to find out if it can fly.

Thanksgiving Foods That Should Be CAREFULLY Packed In Your Checked Bags (if more than 3.4-ounces)

- Gravy - Same goes for gravy, homemade or in a jar/can.
- Wine, champagne, sparkling apple cider.
- Canned fruit or vegetables - They’ve got liquid in the can, so check them.
- Preserves, jams and jellies - These are spreadable, too, that means check them.
