ROYAL OAK (WWJ) – Mark your calendars. HopCat is making its return to downtown Royal Oak on Jan. 23.

The popular bar and restaurant announced its reopening date on Tuesday. The old HopCat Royal Oak location, at Washington and Fifth Avenue, closed in 2020 during the height of the pandemic.

But they vowed to return to Royal Oak. After announcing in October the restaurant would reopen sometime this winter at a new location – just a few blocks away at 430 Main Street in the former Noodles & Company, GameStop and BD’s Mongolian Grill storefronts – work is well underway to bring back Cosmik fries and endless craft beer options.

HopCat general Manager Kinnewu Pulford tells WWJ’s Ryan Marshall the restaurant offers something others in the area won’t.

“We’re the fun, approachable place,” Pulford said during a sneak peek of the new location on Tuesday. “We have great food, comfort food. We’ve got a spot for anybody. You want to bring in your family, we have a whole other dining area, you want to come out for a night out with your friends and really just have a good time in a nice, relaxed atmosphere that’s all about good food and music, we’re really the place to go.”

The new HopCat location will feature more than 11,000 square feet at the corner of Fifth and Main, with more than 60 beer taps featuring local and national craft beer brands.

During the summer, there will be open garage doors, and they plan to be part of the Royal Oak Social District, so customers will be able to bring beer outside.
