The actor died Sunday morning at his home in Portland, Oregon, one of his sons told the Hollywood Reporter. His cause of death was not disclosed.

With credits on screen and on the stage, Hurt made his on-screen debut in Ken Russell’s “Altered States” in 1980. Hurt went on to star in roles in “The Big Chill”, “Kiss of a Spider Woman” – for which he nabbed the Oscar for Best Actor in 1985 -, “Children of a Lesser God”, “Broadcast News”, and “A History of Violence” – receiving Oscar nominations for those movies as well.

Marvel fans would recognize Hurt as Secretary of State Thaddeus Ross, as he played the character in “The Incredible Hulk”, “Captain America: Civil War”, and more recently, “Black Widow.”

Hurt is survived by his four children.

He was 71 years old.
