“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” the statement shares. “After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home, departing this life today, Oct. 14, 2025.”

“We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind. We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time but invite you all join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.”

D’Angelo helped lead the 90s neo-soul sound, sending shockwaves through the industry with his debut album, Brown Sugar, in 1995. The LP was nominated for 4 GRAMMY awards.

The follow-up, Voodoo, arrived in 2000, followed by his third and final album, Black Messiah, which topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Album when it was released in 2014.

In recent years, the singer appeared on Verzuz in 2021, and he was slated to be a headliner at this year's Roots Picnic, but he ultimately had to cancel due to unforeseen recovery from surgery. He said at the time in a post, "currently in the lab and can't wait to serve up what's in the pot."
