The Explanation Of Why So Many People Are Choosing To Vote

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) - The Midterm Election Ballots are officially open.

Steve Futterman, CBS Correspodent, joined KDKA Radio on Tuesday to talk about the election and why so many people are choosing to vote this year.

Our Government is founded on a system of Checks and Balances, with the three levels of power in Washington D.C. Has this become an election about checking that power?

"It's been eight years of Republican control, but the Democrats believe they have a good chance to pick up 23 seats; that would give them the 218 seat majority that is required to control the house," Futterman said.

"President Trump would have to get any major legislation through a Democratically controlled house and maybe more importantly, there could be Democratic lead investigations of the President. Lots of things that could come under investigation."

Why are more people voting this year?

"This midterm has obviously, with President Trump being the focal point, sort of a referendum on the president. A lot of attention is being focused on 'do you like what President Trump has done' or 'do you not like what he has done,'" Futterman added.

"The thing hanging over this entire election is the Trump Presidency."

Will the GOP remain in control of the senate?

"In the senate, it does appear to be a longshot that the Democrats will take over. They only need two seats, the problem is the way it's configured this cycle. You have one third of the senate elected every two years, and most of the seats being battled for are controlled by Democrats," Futterman tells KDKA Radio.

"It just doesn't seem to be in the cards unless that blue wave the democrats have talked about comes true."

If the democrats take over the house, how will President Trump react?

"Will he be someone who suddenly decides to compromise? This is a president, who we've seen in the past, can talk very tough. In the end, he does find a way, sometimes, to compromise," Futterman explains.

"I can talk about the NAFTA deal with Canada and Mexico. Lots of other things where he talks tough. Maybe that's his strategy in dealing with things."
