In her “own words”, Bieber explained that she felt a “weird sensation” in her right arm while having breakfast with her husband, Justin Bieber. The sensation traveled from her arm to her fingertips, which felt numb. When Justin asked if she was okay, she recalled that she couldn’t speak. "The right side of my face started drooping, I couldn't get a sentence out," she expressed. "Immediately, I thought I was having a stroke."
Then a nearby medic began examining her as an ambulance was called. "By the time I got to the emergency room, I was pretty much back to normal. I could talk, I wasn't having any issues with my face or my arm,” she added. Bieber stayed overnight in the hospital and underwent a series of tests. At the hospital, doctors determined that she suffered a small blood clot to her brain. The medical emergency was categorized as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) often referred to as a mini-stroke.
Bieber’s doctors said that three factors likely caused the blood clot including birth control pills (as a migraine sufferer), a previous COVID-19 diagnosis, and frequent traveling. “The conclusion was that I had a blood clot that traveled into my heart and instead of — what typically happens if you have a small blood clot is that the heart will filter the blood clot to your lungs and your lungs will absorb it,” Bieber further explained. “What happened with me is my blood clot actually escaped through the flap, or the hole in my heart, and it traveled to my brain and that is why I suffered a TIA.”
Bieber was diagnosed with a grade 5 Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO). To remedy the PFO, she underwent a PFO closure procedure. Bieber is now recovering, after sharing news of her hospitalization last month via Instagram Story.
