The father and daughter were estranged for 30 years. Rowland shared, “My understanding of where my dad was as a kid was that he was not really ready as a father. I was angry at him. I was disappointed in him. I had all of those feelings of abandonment."
The former Destiny’s Child continued, “I think as a kid you just feel like if they're not there they don't want to be here. So that's what I felt and that feeling sucked.”
Throughout the pre-taped interview, Rowland shared that during big milestones in her life her feelings about her father started to shift. In 2014, Rowland and her husband, Tim Weatherspoon, welcomed their first child, Titan Jewell.
Three weeks after the birth of her son, the singer’s mother, Doris Rowland Garrison passed away. The two events left the artist yearning to develop a relationship with her father.
Kelly recounted, “I said, 'I really need to know him. I want to meet him,' "... I think I had these feelings of like, 'Oh my God, I have no parents.' And it was like, no, you do — you have one left."
Eventually, Rowland and Lovett met up at an Atlanta hotel. The “Flowers” singer noted that before her meetup she was prepared to question her father about their estranged relationship. “Before I walked in, I had all these thoughts of what I was gonna say, I had all these questions lined up,” said Rowland. “And as soon as I saw his face, it was a blank."
After spending hours with her father, she noted that it was “incredible” to get to know Lovett. She told Today, "Underneath all the disappointment and hurt and anger and fear — that's somebody you love.”
During the show, Rowland and Lovett sat down with Hoda Kotb for an interview. The pair spoke about their dynamic and shared candid details about their path to rekindling their father-daughter relationship.
In the past, when Rowland was touring the world with Beyoncé and Michelle Williams during the height of their Destiny’s Child career, the group’s security team knew not to allow Lovett backstage if he chose to attend one of her shows. Lovett explained that he followed Roland’s career from afar. “People used to tell me, 'I saw your daughter,' and I used to sit there and say, 'Well, I didn't,' and it used to hurt," he said.
Rowland revealed that JAY-Z played a huge hand in her and her father reuniting. The artist explained that when she questioned getting to know her father, the music mogul told her, “Love is all about risk. You gotta decide if you’re gonna jump.”
Lovett told Kotb that he is more than pleased to have his daughter back in his life and that he still can’t believe the two were able to reconnect. Speaking about seeing his daughter for the first time in three decades Lovett said, “I couldn't believe it. It was just like a dream, really.
[It's] the same way I feel now. I don't believe this."
