Måneskin remembers some 'crazy' moments on their road to stardom: 'You just pretend to be chill'

'We know that we still have a lot of things to do -- and that's just what we want to do, so we're cool with it'

Fresh off the release of their brand new single, “SUPERMODEL,” Måneskin singer Damiano David, guitarist Thomas Raggi, and drummer Ethan Torchio joined Audacy host Brad for a Check In today while bassist Victoria De Angelis was away. While the group is hardly ever seen separated, today is one of those occasions, but the guys say they each get plenty of downtime, used mostly to poke fun at each other.

Together since 2016, worldwide phenoms Måneskin have been steadily becoming a household name since before their big Eurovision win in 2021, and they’re fully aware that selling millions of records is just one piece of the puzzle; Introducing themselves, and a new legion of fans to their sound, will always be part of their job. “We get that we got way bigger than we were a year ago,” says Damiano, “but also we’re not still at Dua Lipa level, or The Weeknd level. So, we know that we still have a lot of things to do -- and that’s just what we want to do, so we’re cool with it.” Although, it’s quite safe to say they’re one of the biggest bands on the planet. “You said it,” Damiano says with a smile. “We let other people say it!”

Explaining their rise, after meeting in middle school and forming the band later in high school, Damiano remembers the group’s worst-ever performance was at an outdoor party booked by a very young and excited promoter. “I remember we asked for like €200 and at the end of it all he kind of disappears. We keep texting him because we really needed that money at the time, and he just disappeared. Nobody saw him again.”

Even with nightmare stories like that, there was never a thought in any of the members minds that quitting was an option. “No. No way. None at all… never,” they all agree. “Well, we were too young to get a real job, so we just kept doing it,” Damiano laughs.

Their work paid off handsomely, after getting to open for The Rolling Stones, meeting some of their favorite artists like Iggy Pop and Rage Against The Machine's Tom Morello to name just a few, and getting invites to the biggest award shows. “We’ve had a lot of crazy moments,” Damiano admits. “You just pretend to be chill… ‘Oh yeah I’m a musician too, what are you working on right now?’ Then they go away and you’re like, ‘FUUUUUUUUUUUU!’”

Moving forward, fans can expect a wide variety of sounds from the band, tackling deep topics as well as bringing a bit of fun into the mix. “I think that every kind of music and every style of music deserves its respect, but when it comes to Rock N’ Roll I think that people are very attached to the old-fashioned Rock N’ Roll thing, and what lasted more is the more deep part of that kind of music,” Damiana explains, “but Rock N’ Roll used to be also just fun; Songs about sex, or fun, or parties. That’s the cool thing about Rock N’ Roll – it’s a very various genre and it allows you to do anything – a fun song, a very deep song, or both in the same song.”

“We used to be always very deep in every song,” Damiano adds, “and I think we learned to take ourselves less seriously and how to be more care-free and enjoyable in a certain way. But [from] my perspective, I prefer to write deep lyrics.”
