“It’s been such an amazing journey and I just love all the love and support I’ve been getting,” she said. “It makes me so happy, it warms my heart.”

Nessa is fresh off the release of her debut EP Pretty Poison, a record that’s already exceeded her wildest expectations. “This project was so personal and for people to receive it in such a good way means a lot for me,” she said.

Although the making of the EP was “kind of a blur” to her, Barrett only had one thing in mind when she went to record it. “All I know is I had a story to tell and that was my priority,” she said.

“It was one big therapy session, honestly, and I can’t believe everyone is listening to it now.”

Nessa also opened up on some of the struggles that come with performing. It’s not that she doubts her music or ability to entertain a crowd, it’s just that getting on stage in front of people is a scary prospect. “It does not come easy to me,” she says, “I think that’s one of the hardest things.”

Barrett says she’s “getting there” and “working on it,” but the idea of standing in front of people on stage is still daunting. “It just sucks because it’s not the idea that my performance is going to be bad,” she said. “I’m just scared of people,” she added with a laugh.

Her confidence shines through though as she thinks she’ll become a bit more comfortable on stage where she’s performing a full set of her music. “The real me never liked to be in the spotlight,” she said. “When I actually have to step out into the spotlight in person, it’s like ‘Oh God!’”

Nessa Barrett is one of many artists you can catch at Audacy Beach Festival 2021 as she’s set to take the stage on Sunday, December 5th.
