Was Kim Kardashian asking everyone to stay back at the Balenciaga Paris Fashion Week show over the weekend?
The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star arrived looking like she could stop traffic – quite literally. Kardashian was wrapped from neck to ankle in what looked like caution tape, but with the fashion house's name emblazoned on it instead of the traditional warning to be careful.
She paired the bodysuit with matching heels and a purse that were also wrapped in the bright yellow tape.
If the goal was to encourage people to keep their distance, it didn't work with Salma Hayek. The actress posted a photo of herself with the reality star on Instagram, tagging Balenciaga and using the hashtag for Paris Fashion Week in the caption alongside emojis of the Ukranian flag and a peace dove.
Hayek herself went for a much simpler statement – stylistically and politically. She wore a simple blue top and yellow skirt – the colors of the Ukrainian flag, in support of Ukraine.
As Today reports, other guests also showed their sartorial support for the country, which is currently under attack by Russian forces, and Balenciaga itself dedicated the show to the refugees who have fled, or are fleeing, Ukraine.
Demna Gvasalia, Balenciaga's creative director, shared photos on Instagram of the Ukranian flags that were placed at each seat for the show, as well as a heartfelt message. "The war in Ukraine has triggered the pain of a past trauma I have carried in me since 1993, when the same thing happened in my home country and I became a forever refugee," wrote Gvasalia, who was born in Georgia before moving to Germany in 2001.
He continued, writing that he considered canceling the show because "in a time like this, fashion loses its relevance and its actual right to exist. Fashion week feels like some kind of an absurdity," but said he "realized that cancelling this show would mean giving in, surrendering to the evil that has already hurt me so much for almost 30 years."
