Twenty-five different recordings are being added to the prestigious National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.

The recordings span from 1908 through 2012 and meet the criteria of being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant,” as well as at least 10 years old. The collection now includes 625 pieces of audio from radio broadcasts, significant speeches, songs and more.
Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina,” John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven,” John Denver’s "Take Me Home, Country Roads,” Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” Eurythmics’ "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This),” The Four Seasons’ “Sherry” are all songs among this years entrants.
"The National Recording Registry preserves our history through recorded sound and reflects our nation's diverse culture," said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden. “The national library is proud to help ensure these recordings are preserved for generations to come, and we welcome the public’s input on what songs, speeches, podcasts or recorded sounds we should preserve next. We received more than 1,100 public nominations this year for recordings to add to the registry.”
Other entrants include audiobook Pale Blue Dot by astronomer Carl Sagan, the Super Mario Bros. theme, as well as Dorothy Thompson’s commentary and analysis of the European Situation for NBC Radio.
