LISTEN NOW: Olivia Rodrigo - On The Record

As listeners gasped at the surprise visit from Rodrigo, the "drop dead" singer thanked them for continuing on this journey into her excellent new project. "It's a really, a surreal honor to get to like grow up with the people who listen to my music " she tells Bru. "It's not something that I take lightly and I'm just really excited for this next chapter."

While on stage with Bru inside our Sound Space, Olivia went into each song on the album, including "purple," which went through a transformation during the making of the record. "Purple was initially a love song, like a pure, happy, positive love song," she reveals. "We kind of wrote it and then forgot about it and a few months later Dan pulled it up and we started like messing with the production and making a little weirder and kind of sadder, and so we changed the lyrics and made it kind of about a relationship sort of falling apart a little bit, or like an inkling of the idea that it's gonna fall apart. So yeah, that's how it ended up on the record."

Rodrigo also talks about her collaboration with Robert Smith of The Cure, who sings and plays on "what's wrong with me," but also has a presence throughout the LP. "I sang with him at Glastonbury, which was incredible, and that sort of was the beginning of our relationship," she shares. "After that we sort of started becoming friends and and hung out a few times in London, and yeah, the song just came to be and I'm so stoked that he's on it. Actually can't believe it and every time I listen to it I'm like I have to pinch myself a little bit."
