Speaking with Audacy's 1010 WINS, actress Valerie Bertinelli remembered her late Hot In Cleveland co-star Betty White as an "angel on Earth" who "glowed with kindness," and also says she and her son have "leaned on each other" over the past year to deal with Eddie Van Halen’s death.

Bertinelli told 1010 WINS' Newsline with Brigitte Quinn on Tuesday that White, who died at 99 on December 31, embodied some of the lessons on self-love and gratitude that she hopes to impart in her new memoir, Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.
“Talk about living firmly in gratitude. Betty did that, and through that she just glowed,” Bertinelli told Quinn. “I’ve said it a million times, and I’ll say it a million again. The woman just oozed kindness and glowed from it. We all know how beautiful Betty was as a human being, because we know how she made us feel.”
“And I think we can all try to get close to that,” Bertinelli said. “I mean none of us are going to be Betty White. She was a special individual, angel on Earth. But we can try to get close to that by looking at the good and being kind.”
A little over a year after the October 2020 death of her former husband Eddie Van Halen at 65, Bertinelli said she and their son, Wolfgang Van Halen, have helped each other bear the loss of the legendary guitarist.
“Like everyone else, I mean we’ve all had to do with a lot of sadness and grief over the last few years with this COVID,” Bertinelli said. “I think by leaning on each other. He comes over all the time with his girlfriend, Andraia, and they sit with the cats and that brings him joy. And I’ll go over there and make dinner for them or lunch for them, and we make sure to make time for one another.”
Bertinelli said she's grateful that she and Van Halen, “were able to come to an understanding” near the end of his life. “We were able to atone for all the regrets we had of how we treated each other and to come back to the love that we originally shared for one another,” she said.
Bertinelli said her new book is about “finding a way back to joy” despite all of life’s challenges.
“I know most people’s default setting is joy, is kindness, is love,” she said. “So I want us all to be able to work ourselves back to that and not just live in the self-loathing part that some of us are unfortunately too comfortable in—and I’m including myself in that.”
