The iconic comedian joined Audacy’s Kevin Klein and Ally Johnson to discuss his upcoming string of standup gigs at Tommy T’s Comedy Club in Pleasanton, CA. For Wayans, the opportunity to perform again is one that’ll be as therapeutic to himself as it is to the crowd.
“I feel like people really need a laugh,” he said. “For me, I need people. I was severely depressed after my mom died and I was like, ‘I gotta get out and make people laugh and remember my purpose.’ Once I’ve seen people laughing I felt like, ‘OK, I feel like myself.’”
While Wayans and his brothers have been making fans laugh for decades, it sometimes comes at the expense of brotherly fighting with one another. Marlon gave us an insight into what makes the Wayans brothers tick. “We fight over dumb stuff,” he says. “Me and my brother [Shawn Wayans] stopped talking for a year over a joke.”
“The joke happened to me so it’s my joke, but he’s like ‘yeah but I did it to you, it’s my joke,’” he added.
What was the resolution? Wayans says, “being that he can beat me up still, it’s like a mind thing with older brothers. I kind of gave up.”
