Jaws dropped as Luke welcomed Wallen to the stage halfway through his set alongside additional surprise guests, Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard.
Bryan, Wallen, Aldean and Hubbard treated fans to a unique “jam session” as they shared the stage, each treating fans to performances of their own songs. Wallen performed his hit, “Whiskey Glasses” and "More Than My Hometown," while Aldean sang “She’s Country.”
Wallen was originally scheduled as an opener on the Proud To Be Right Here Tour, but gave up his spot after making the decision to stay away from the spotlight after a video of him using a racial slur surfaced earlier this year. Morgan shared his decision with fans via a handwritten letter two months after the video surfaced.
“I’ve found this time away to be very valuable to me in many ways, but I feel like I need a little more of it, + therefore will not be performing tour dates this Summer,” Wallen expressed in the four-page handwritten letter posted to his Instagram account. “It means I won’t be playing festivals or the Luke Bryan tour dates. But it’s important to me personally, if you can, still go to these shows - support Country music. Country music is back and that’s a beautiful damn thing.”
Wallen’s appearance at the tour stop on Friday took place one week after his first public interview surrounding the racial slur incident was released. The interview aired on Good Morning America and was conducted by Michael Strahan.
During his conversation with Strahan, the 28-year-old opened up about details surrounding the night the video was captured, consequences he’s suffered as a result and the steps he’s taken to educate himself on the topic of racism.
