"My dad was a nuclear engineer and I learned almost nothing from him about it," Gregr explains, thinking about the world’s first nuclear fusion reactor to be tested this year. "But when I was reading this article... I couldn't help but think of a certain superhero movie -- a terrible superhero movie from the 2000s -- that addressed this subject already. Basically, let's hope their circuit breaker is working so we don't end up creating a star on the surface of the earth and giving everyone in Europe a permanent sunburn."

Unlike current nuclear facilities that use fission to split an atom, scientists are going to smash them together in this test. What this entire project comes down to, in a glowing and highly-unstable nutshell is, we could be within just a couple of decades of solving the world's energy problems. Also, possibly a real-life Spider-Man 2.

There’s a whole lot more beautiful nerdiness where this came from. Listen weekdays at noon on your favorite RADIO.COM Alternative stations. Download the free app now to listen on the go!
