Drummer Neil Peart of the legendary Canadian prog rock band Rush has died at the age of 67.
Considered in technical circles to be one of the best of his craft of all time, Peart had quietly been battling brain cancer for three and a half years, the band said in a statement.
A spokesman said Peart died in Santa Monica, CA on Tuesday.
Peart joined Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson in Rush in 1974 and became the primary lyricist for a band that made music that defied boundaries.
The trio was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013 on the strength of songs like "Tom Sawyer," "Limelight" and "Fly By Night," but die hard fans are known for delving much deeper into Rush's catalog that that. Their final tour was in 2015.
Peart is survived by his wife, Carrie, and daughter, Olivia.
