Bertinelli sat down with USA Today to discuss the new project which consists of various essays detailing some of the most personal times of Bertinelli’s life and how she’s grown to accept her circumstances. Included in the project are details of the deep love she shared with ex-husband, Eddie Van Halen, and the grief she’s experienced since his passing from cancer in 2020.

"I wasn't expecting to write a book about grief when I started it, but I was in the thick of it," she shared of the project which she started penning just weeks after his passing. "It actually ended up being very cathartic to write about it."

According to Bertinelli’s book, the pair met backstage at a Van Halen show which ignited an "instantaneous and mutual" spark that was unlike anything she’d ever experienced.

"I can't make people understand this, because it's so personal, but I've never felt love like that," she shares. "Even through all of the horrible stuff that we did to each other, there were so many more good things. I just don't feel like I've ever been loved like that, in that way, from anybody else. I just feel a connection with Ed that I've never really felt with anyone else."

She adds, “We couldn’t live with each other, but we found it impossible to live completely apart… Love isn't a big enough word for the feeling that Ed felt for me, and that I felt for him."

Her relationship with Ed isn’t the only thing Bertinelli opens up about in her book. She also explores her turbulent second marriage, self-doubt and body image issues.
