"I was talking to you right before I was writing this record, about how I wanted to find this record," singer and songwriter Chris Carrabba tells Kevan. "I didn't know this was what I'd find, but this is what I was hoping when we were last talking." Carrabba had just been in the midst of anniversary tours and found that looking back on his body of work, he had "lost the narrative" along the way, from his early songs to his current and wanted to find the "connective tissue" that had fans gravitate to his music in the first place. "I felt like I'd lost the through-line," he admits. "And I think around the time we were talking last, I was really hungry for it, but I also didn't know even where to look. But that's always how it goes for songwriting; it's like this mystery, like 'Oh it'll never happen again.'"
"I don't know how many records you can write thinking that way," Carrabba says, "but it seems to be all of them." Luckily, this time around Chris had producer James Paul Wisner, who helmed his first two albums, back as not just a working partner, but as a long-time friend who could "hold up a mirror" and keep him honest throughout the recording process. Longtime fans, like Kevan, love Dashboard for the brutal honesty in their songs, and that's something Carrabba has been protective of over the years; balancing all of the versions of truth that can be told. "The operative word in that [album title] is 'Can,'" Chris says. "'All The Truth That I Can Tell.' All the truth that I'll allow myself to tell, or feel allowed by circumstance to tell. Is this all the truth that I'm telling now? I hope so, but it's always in hindsight that you can see all the circumstances that may be keeping you, or helping you say the thing that is important."
