Will Swift shift genres again? Will a lead single arrive in time to be eligible at the 2023 GRAMMYs? Pop Shop’s Katie Atkinson and Keith Caulfield talk about it all and more in the latest episode of The Pop Shop podcast.

As Taylor has shifted genres throughout the years, one of the biggest questions floating around the new album is what genre it will be. According to Atkinson, there might be a hint in Taylor’s VMA after-party wardrobe ensemble.

“One hint that I’m taking — Taylor doesn’t do anything accidentally — so I’m taking this hint seriously,” said Katie. “She wore an outfit inspired by Midnights for a VMAs afterparty look and it was kind of like a romper, like a navy, satin romper with stars on it.”

She continued, “So it looked kind of like the night sky and then this huge fur — not sure about the story on the fur, vintage or whatever the case may be — but the look was very mid-70s which got me sort of excited because I was thinking like, maybe we’re thinking like Joni [Mitchell]? Or Stevie [Nicks]? Like, these are the vibes I was getting from this outfit…. Like a Pop-Poetry sort of thing.”

While we know the release date of the new album, we are left wondering when Swift will release a lead single — will it come before or after the re-record of 1989? Will she release it in time for a nomination at the 2023 GRAMMY Awards?

“I think it’s interesting we’re getting Midnights before we’re getting the 1989 re-record,” speculated Keith before remembering, it’s Taylor Swift and she can shake things up at a moment’s notice! “[Well], we don’t know, 1989 [re-record] could show up on Friday for all we know.”

As for releasing a single before the end of September to be eligible to receive a GRAMMY — “Wouldn’t that also make her go up against her own ‘All Too Well (Taylor’s Version)’?" asked Keith. Good Point!

Join in the speculation as Keith and Katie tirelessly try to figure out the details that Taylor has long had planned out by tuning into the latest episode of The Pop Shop podcast above.
