28-year-old nurse shares emotional video hours before dying of COVID

A social media update about a young nurse’s life quickly became a heartbreaking reminder of the toll the coronavirus pandemic is taking on healthcare workers.

Sergio Humberto Padilla, a 28-year-old Mexican nurse, became infected with COVID-19 and was intubated on November 5.

The man from the northern state of Chihuahua recorded a video for his family and friends to update them on his health and to let them know that he was going to be hooked up to a respirator.

Padilla shared the video on social media and said he hoped he'd get better soon, but the nurse died mere hours later, reports People en Español.

“Well, it’s the moment of truth. I’m going to be intubated,” he shared in the video. “I want, no matter what happens, no matter what God has planned for me, for you to remember me always for who I was and for what I am.”

Padilla continued from his hospital bed, sharing that he was hopeful that he would recuperate. “I’ll be back, I’m sure that I’ll be back in a few days once I get better, God willing,” he said. “This isn’t goodbye, I’m sure that I’ll be back in a few days… I’ll see you all again. Friends, family, I love you and I know that you’ll be praying for me, for my health, for my welfare,” he said.

According to The Daily Mail, Padilla worked as part of a four-person team at a municipal hospital. Chihuahua has been one of the states most affected by the coronavirus pandemic in Mexico, with some hospitals in the area being so overrun with COVID-19 cases that they have had to turn away other patients, reports the outlet.
