If you've noticed the weather getting more extreme every year, it's not your imagination.

More than 3.3 million U.S. residents were displaced by natural disasters last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey.

The startling number means more than 1.3% of the adult population was left homeless by hurricanes, floods, fires, tornadoes or other disasters.

Hurricanes were the most destructive, leaving more than 1.9 million people displaced. Another 665,000 people were displaced by flooding, nearly 660,000 were displaced by fires, and more than 320,000 were displaced by tornadoes. Another 685,000 people were displaced by "other" natural disasters.

Florida led the country with nearly 1 million displacements, about 1 in 17 residents. Louisiana followed with 409,000 displacements, almost 1 in 8 residents, per the report.

States rounding out the top 10 include:
• Texas -- 380,768 displacements
• California -- 253,953 displacements
• Georgia -- 95,700 displacements
• New Jersey -- 93,122 displacements
• Michigan -- 86,996 displacements
• Arizona -- 82,838 displacements
• North Carolina -- 78,388 displacements
• Pennsylvania -- 59,602 displacements

Among the states impacted the least, North Dakota came in last place with 1,088 displacements, followed by Vermont with 1,629 residents displaced.

States rounding out the bottom 10 include:
• Maine -- 1,943 displacements
• Rhode Island -- 2,607 displacements
• West Virginia -- 4,169 displacements
• Alaska -- 4,355 displacements
• Arkansas -- 5,069 displacements
• Hawaii -- 5,131 displacements
• Wyoming -- 5,151 displacements
• Indiana -- 6,588 displacements

Of the 3.3 million displaced adults, about one-third were able to return in about a week, the Census Bureau says. About one in six residents -- more than 543,000 people -- never returned to their homes, the report reveals.
