5 Valentine's Day inspired cocktail recipes to enjoy this February

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With Valentine's Day around the corner, here are some romantic cocktails that you can enjoy all month long, whether it be with your significant other, friends, family, or by yourself! These five cocktails have been brought to us by our friends at The Spice House.

Courting Cupid cocktail

Courting Cupid Cocktail Recipe
Serves 1


For the syrup
• 0.5 cup lavender vanilla sugar
• 0.5 cup water
For the infused gin
• 10 grams (roughly ⅓ cup) hibiscus blossoms
• 750ml bottle gin
For the cocktail
• 1.5 ounces hibiscus-infused gin
• 1 ounce grapefruit juice
• 1 egg white
• 0.5 ounce lavender vanilla syrup
• 2 drops rose water
• Hawaiian red sea salt for rim garnish


To make infused gin:
• Step 1: Grind up hibiscus blossoms into a powder. (Try using a food processor or dedicated coffee grinder.)
• Step 2. Add powdered hibiscus to the gin bottle and let it infuse for 10 minutes, shaking gently at first. Strain gin through a cheesecloth or coffee filter.
To make syrup:
• Step 1. Combine water and vanilla lavender sugar in a small sauce pot. Bring to a boil while stirring constantly.
• Step 2. Lower to a simmer and continue cooking for 3 minutes.
• Step 3. Strain and let cool.
To make the cocktail:
• Step 1. Combine infused gin, grapefruit juice, egg white, lavender syrup, and rose water in a shaker with ice.
• Step 2. Shake well.
• Step 3. Rim the glass with sea salt and strain into a rocks glass with a large ice cube.
• Step 4. Enjoy your Courting Cupid!

Cardamom Bourbon Hot Cocoa

Cardamom Bourbon Hot Cocoa Recipe
Serves 1


• 4 heaping tablespoons of Hazelnut Hot Cocoa Mix
• 0.5 cup hot water
• 1.5 cups of whole milk
• 3 fluid ounces bourbon whiskey
• 0.5 teaspoon ground cardamom seeds


• Step 1. In a small saucepan whisk together hot water, hot cocoa mix, and cardamom until they are fully incorporated together.
• Step 2. Slowly add milk to the pan while whisking steadily. Turn the burner on medium, and continue stirring while the milk heats up and mixes with the cocoa. Be careful not to let the mixture burn or over-boil.
• Step 3. When the cocoa is ready, mix in the whisky and serve in a warm mug.
• Step 4. Garnish with marshmallows, shaved chocolate, and a pinch of extra cardamom.
• Step 5. Enjoy your Cardamom Bourbon Hot Cocoa!

Smoky Hibiscus Margarita

Smoky Hibiscus Margarita Recipe
Serves 1


• 1 cup of sugar
• 1 cup of water
• 0.5 cup of Hibiscus Blossom
• 2 ounces of tequila
• 1 ounce of cointreau
• 1 ounce of hibiscus syrup
• 1 ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice
• Hawaiian Smoked Sea Salt for garnish


To make the syrup:
• Step 1. Bring one cup of water to a boil, steep hibiscus petals in water for 10-15 minutes. Stir hibiscus water with a spoon a few times while it steeps.
• Step. 2 Pour water through a wire mesh, straining out all petals and particulates.
• Step 3. While water is still warm, stir in sugar until completely dissolved.
To make the cocktail:
• Step 1. Wet the rim of a cocktail glass with a lime wedge and roll in Kiawe Smoked Sea Salt.
• Step 2. Fill glass with ice.
• Step 3. In a cocktail shaker, combine tequila, cointreau, lime juice, hibiscus syrup, and ice. Shake for 20-30 seconds.
• Step 4. Pour/strain cocktail into glass.
• Step 5. Garnish with a slice of lime.
• Step 6. Enjoy your Smoky Hibiscus Margarita!

Pink Peppercorn Gin

Pink Peppercorn Gin Recipe
Makes 1 bottle or jar


• 3 tablespoons of juniper berries
• 1 tablespoon of Indian coriander seed
• 1 teaspoon of dried lemon zest
• 1 teaspoon of whole allspice berries
• 1.5 teaspoons of Red Kampot peppercorns
• 1.5 teaspoons of pink peppercorns
• 1 750ml bottle vodka


• Step 1. Put juniper in a quart jar, pour vodka. Cap the jar tightly and let it infuse for twelve hours or overnight.
• Step 2. After twelve hour pre-soak, add the rest of the herbs and spices to the vodka. Let sit and infuse for 36 to 72 hours.
• Step 3. Strain the infused gin into another jar using a fine mesh sieve.
• Step 4. Store in a bottle or jar in a cool, dark place for up to a year.
• Step 5. Enjoy your homemade Pink Peppercorn Gin!

Spice House Sling

Spice House Sling Cocktail Recipe


• 4 parts gin
• 3 parts Bénédictine
• 2 parts Cherry Heering
• 1 part pomegranate molasses
• 1 part sugar
• 7 parts pineapple-orange juice
• 1 part fresh squeezed lime juice
• 1 dash orange bitters


• Step 1. To mix, stir pomegranate molasses and sugar at the bottom of a cocktail shaker until well combined.
• Step 2. Stir in lime juice and add ice to fill the shaker.
• Step 3. Add gin, Bénédictine, Cherry Heering, and pineapple-orange juice.
• Step 4. Shake vigorously for one minute.
• Step 5. Add a dash of bitters and gently shake a few times to roughly combine.
• Step 6. Strain into tall glasses with lime wedge to garnish.
• Step 7. Cut with club soda to serve a crowd.
• Step 8. Enjoy your Spice House Sling!
