The Biden campaign remains optimistic that the White House is within its grasp.

As mail-in ballots are counted and Democratic nominee Joe Biden flips more states that Donald Trump won four years ago, the Bay Area's own Kamala Harris inches closer to history.

Joe Biden's National Coalitions Director of African Americans for Biden, Ashley Alison, is a veteran of the Obama White House. Alison thinks she's about to go back - this time working for President Biden.

"We want to count every vote, even if they aren't for Joe Biden," Alison told KCBS Radio. "We want every vote counted. When that happens, we know we will get to 270 and win."

There is more than cautious optimism now among the Biden team.

For its Black leaders, that optimism is tempered by the sobering reality of just how close this election is.

"I know some people woke up a little bit feeling deflated because so many people have voted for Donald Trump, but we know, that you cannot reverse 400 years of racism in four years," Alison explained.

Allison said it will be an extraordinary moment if and when Harris makes history as the first woman and first person of color to be declared vice president-elect, but they're not quite ready to celebrate that just yet.
