'Band of Mothers' podcast hosts talk about how COVID has affected moms 'dramatically'

Shayna Ferm and Tracey Tee, hosts of the “Band of Mothers” podcast, are talking about the ways in which the coronavirus pandemic has affected moms. They’re also opening up about the roots of their podcast along with the ways dads can benefit from listening.

Shayna and Tracey have set out to create a community of mothers who lift each other up, beginning with “The Pump and Dump Show,” a comedy show that offers a “parentally incorrect” night out for moms. Their podcast, “Band of Mothers” is an extension of that.

“’Band of Mothers’ podcast is a complete extension of ‘The Pump and Dump Show,’” Tracey said. “We wanted to take that dialogue and that community and extend the conversation and that’s kind of the nexus of the podcast.”

She went on to say the conversation the podcast provides is casual with their show attendees, adding, “It’s like if we just walked on stage and then grabbed a glass of wine or a cup of coffee and kept talking to those same audience members.”

Shayna added, “The podcast really organically was the next natural step for Tracey and I to continue building our community.”

And when it comes to building that community, there’s really one idea in mind. “Validating moms is ultimately our goal,” Shayna said.

With COVID looming and putting “The Pump and Dump Show” on a forced hiatus, Shayna and Tracey talked about how motherhood has changed with the challenges the pandemic has brought on.

“I think that COVID has affected moms dramatically more in a way that we might not understand for years,” Tracey said. “Having to juggle online school with a job with a husband who’s home and then losing jobs…moms take all of that and just live with it on top of their chests.”

While the podcast is geared towards women and mothers, it’s not just moms who can benefit from the community their podcast and show provide. Dads have enjoyed their content as well.

“We just know a lot of dads who enjoy the podcast. As much as we do talk about vag steams and stuff that’s probably a little too grody for them, funny is funny,” Shayna explained. “When things are interesting, when things are thought-provoking, when they’re informational like we want ‘Band of Mothers’ podcast to be, I think that speaks for itself.”

As the duo continues to create content for their podcast, there’s been a shift in the way they feel about motherhood as their kids have gotten older.

“It’s interesting – when they’re little, it’s survival mode and exhaustion physically,” Shayna said Tracey adds with a laugh, “And terror and worry.”

Shayna continued on about how this mindset shifts when your kids age. “It’s a different kind of survival. It’s less about making sure they eat and sleep and more about that they’re good humans and nobody picks on them,” she said.
