Scientists are saying atmospheric carbon dioxide is at levels our human species has never experienced before.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Global Monitoring Laboratory has released its latest data on the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.

They say the level is now more than 50% higher than in pre-industrial times
and is at levels not seen since millions of years ago when Earth was a hothouse ocean-inundated planet.

Scientists say contributors include the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas which releases "greenhouse" gases such as carbon dioxide and methane into Earth's atmosphere and oceans.

Just in the past 20 years, the world's temperature has risen about two-thirds of a degree Fahrenheit and they attribute the planet's rising temperatures to the emissions.

Because of the current carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, US Coastline cities are already committed to sea level rising up to one foot by the year 2050.
