PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — He may not have hit the Mega Millions jackpot, but a multi-million dollar prize is no slouch either.
A 36-year-old man from Greenwood, Delaware won $3 million from the July 22 drawing.
He spontaneously decided to buy a ticket at a Royal Farms store. He forgot about it but scanned it a few days later — only to discover he had matched all five numbers and the 3X Megaplier.
“I thought there had to be a mistake,” the man, who is remaining anonymous, told Delaware Lottery officials. “I checked with the cashier, and sure enough, it really was a $3 million winner.”
According to the Delaware Lottery, he is the largest single lottery winner in Delaware since 2016.
The man said he has been playing draw games once a week for several years.
“I was just showing my wife how easy it is to use the self-service kiosk,” he said. “We saw how big the jackpot was for Mega Millions and decided to give it a try. Why not, right? I’ve won $500 and $600 prizes from Multi-Win Lotto before, but I never expected anything like this.”
He said he and his wife plan to pay off their mortgage with the winnings.
The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday at 11 p.m. The jackpot currently stands at an estimated $1.1 billion, the third-largest pot in the nation.
