If you like poultry, you're in (c)luck.
People who have eaten chicken products in the last 10 years may be eligible to receive money following a class-action settlement against multiple American chicken processors.
The lawsuit, known as the Broiler Chicken Antitrust Litigation, alleges that several U.S. corporations conspired to stabilize the price and supply of chicken, violating both federal and state consumer and antitrust laws. Prosecutors are seeking a $181 million payout from the industry giants for overcharging consumers.
Anyone who purchased chicken products from Jan. 1, 2009 to Dec. 31, 2020 from Fieldale Farms Corporation, George's, Mar-Jac Poultry, Peco Foods, Pilgrim's Pride and Tyson Foods could receive a payment. However, meat marketed as halal, kosher, free-range or organic will not be eligible.
The class action is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. A final hearing to decide whether to approve the settlements will be held on Dec. 20.
Consumers can check their eligibility and file a claim by Dec. 31, 2022 at the Broiler Chicken Settlement website or by calling 877-888-5428. The total payout to consumers is still being finalized at this time.
The chicken processors have not admitted any liability and continue to deny all allegations of wrongdoing.
