Remote work became far more common during the COVID-19 pandemic, recent research shows that workers want even more opportunities to work remote.
In addition to working from home or a non-office location, more people are also expected to work freelance in the future. For those looking for freelance, remote work, which jobs are the best bet?
According to a report released this month based on 296,000 jobs posted to the Freelancer platform between July 1 and Sept. 30, there are five types jobs that people should keep an eye on:
Android app development
So, what is Android app development exactly? Let’s start with app development in general.
Per higher education resource Learn.org, an application developer “creates or writes programs for a particular operating system,” or for the web or a specific device. In this case, developers would make applications for the Android platform, which powers devices such as Google phones and tablets.
“An application developer starts a project by outlining the specifications (defining what the program does, input and what the output will be along with any interfaces),” according to Learn.org. “The developer then creates a program or system, taking into consideration all the specifications.”
To create applications, developers use a programming language. They also run tests, maintain, troubleshoot and update their applications when they are complete.
The median annual salary for this type of work was $109,020 in 2021, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. It requires a bachelor’s degree and Android offers developer guides specifically for its platform.
According to Freelancer.com, Android app development jobs increased by more than 80% from the second to third quarters of 2022.
AJAX and API
AJAX stands for “Asynchronous JavaScript + XML” and it describes a specific approach to developing web applications.
“An Ajax application eliminates the start-stop-start-stop nature of interaction on the Web by introducing an intermediary — an Ajax engine — between the user and the server,” explained Jesse James Garrett of Adaptive Path, who coined the term in 2005. “It seems like adding a layer to the application would make it less responsive, but the opposite is true.”
Garrett used the example of the immediately responsive Google Maps page to explain how AJAX changes web development. AJAX developers build these applications.
According to Freelancer.com, AJAX jobs increased by more than 66% from the second to third quarters of this year.
APIs, or Application Programming Interfaces “are mechanisms that enable two software components to communicate with each other using a set of definitions and protocols,” according to Amazon Web Services.
“For example, the weather bureau’s software system contains daily weather data,” AWS explained. “The weather app on your phone ‘talks’ to this system via APIs and shows you daily weather updates on your phone.”
Similar to Android app developer and AJAX jobs, API jobs require building these mechanisms and dealing with software. According to Freelancer.com, these jobs increased by nearly 60% from the second to third quarter of this year.
Blog writing and YouTube
According to a guide published earlier this year by Shopify, the key to making blog writing a business is to “choose a profitable niche” and write sponsored reviews. Part of this process is also developing an email list to send these blogs to.
Other ways Shopify recommends to monetize freelance blogging include selling advertising placements, joining an affiliate marketing program, offering services, selling digital products, selling physical products, creating a membership community, monetizing YouTube videos and producing a podcast with a sponsor.
Companies will also offer freelance blog writing work. Per the Freelancer.com report, blog writing jobs increased by 55% from the second quarter to the third quarter of 2022 and YouTube jobs increased by around 32%.
Why work from home
During the pandemic, some workers were ordered to stay home to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Apart from preventing disease, research indicates the increase in remote work opened up more opportunities for people with disabilities and may have provided some American women with the flexibility they needed to become mothers for the first time.
