Whenever there is an impending freeze, you'll likely hear a lot about the protection of the “4 P’s”: People, Pets, Pipes and Plants.
A segment on Thursday’s edition of WWL-First News with Tommy Tucker focused on that final “P”.
Dan Gill, professor at the LSU AgCenter and host of the Saturday Morning Garden Show, joined Tommy to calm some nerves regarding how to prepare plants ahead of freezing temperatures.
“First, make sure the plant that you’re worried about warrants that worry. We use lots of hardy plants in our landscapes that aren’t really going to be bothered by the freezes, even temperatures in the teens and Azaleas and Boxwoods are among those shrubs that are hardy in our area,” Gill told Tucker.
Gill advised gardeners to pay closer to attention to tropical plants. Listen to the whole conversation, which includes Gill’s guidance on handling of specific plants and whether wetting down plants before the freeze is a good idea, by clicking the link above.
