Gov. Newsom now says that everyone 16 and older will be eligible to get vaccinated in California by mid-April.
That is raising questions for some about whether or not it is safe to get the vaccine, especially for pregnant women who were excluded from the clinical trials.
“It is safe, as a general statement, to get the COVID vaccines when pregnant or lactating,” said Dr. David Arnoff, professor and junior chair in medicine at Vanderbilt University.
Not only is it safe, but Dr. Arnoff says it may confer some protection on the infant as well.
“There’s some evidence that antibodies against the virus do get transmitted across the placenta in the setting of pregnancy and across breastmilk,” he explained. “And those antibodies should be protective for the newborn, so I think it is really a good idea.”
He advises that anyone who has questions about their particular situation and health conditions should always get in touch with their doctor who can provide more specific advice.
