Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer has told President Joe Biden that he will be leaving the court on Thursday at noon, capping off a 28-year-career as a member of the court.
In a letter to Biden, Breyer shared that he will step down after the court hands down its remaining opinions tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST.
“It has been my great honor to participate as a judge in the effort to maintain our Constitution and the Rule of Law,” Breyer wrote in his letter.
The move comes after the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which has left many in the nation calling for change and protesting the court’s action.
Breyer noted that his replacement, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, is ready to “take the prescribed oaths” and begin serving as the 116th member of the high court.
The last two cases still awaiting a decision from the court concern the environment and immigration.
