LOCKEFORD, Calif. (KNX) – Amazon Prime residents in Lockeford, California will become the first to receive their Prime deliveries via drone later this year.
The company made the announcement in a press release Monday, calling the service Prime Air.

The drone, according to the company, will drop off the package into the customer’s backyard and ensure there’s no obstacles in the drone’s way, including people and animals.
Amazon added that Lockeford has “historic links to the aviation industry.”
“The community boasts one of the early pioneers of aviation—Weldon B. Cooke, who built and flew early planes in the early 1900s—as a former resident,” the company said.
"It's exciting that Amazon will be listening to the feedback of the San Joaquin County community to inform the future development of this technology,” California State Assemblyman Heath Flora said.
Amazon said it is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to earn its required FAA air carrier certification.
While the official date for residents to begin using these deliveries has not been announced, Amazon said it will be free.
