A man from Arkansas tragically died after he fell into a frozen pond trying to save his beloved calf from drowning.

The Logan County Sheriff’s office confirmed the accident involving 69-year-old Jessie Roberts in a Facebook post on Wednesday, reported People.

Roberts was last seen on Tuesday by a friend who visited his house to check in on him, officials said in the post.

When the friend did not find Roberts in his home, he located his truck down by the pond. The friend then called Roberts' family to assist with finding him.

After the family came to the conclusion Roberts might be in the pond, they alerted the police.

Once word had gotten out that Roberts was missing, local authorities received an “overwhelming response” from residents of the town who assisted in his search.

Police and rescue volunteers eventually found Roberts and his beloved calf deceased in the frozen pond. According to the post, police believe Roberts was alone at the time of the incident.

Following the tragic loss, the family reflected on Jessie's love for his calf and his altruistic nature.

“Jessie loved farming and loved his cattle and they have no doubt that when Jessie saw the calf get stuck in the pond, he went in to get the calf out," the family told the police.

"It is a heartbreaking loss for his family and friends and our thoughts and prayers go out to them,” police said in the post.
