Almost one out of 10 people in this country has diabetes.
Certain individuals develop the condition early in life because their body does not make enough of the hormone insulin to help regulate blood sugar.
For the significant number of people who develop diabetes later in life, there is no doubt that lifestyle is a major contributing factor. Poor diet and lack of exercise play a contributing role, and we see a significant number of cases in people who are obese.
Medications are available to help control blood sugar, but lifestyle changes can make a big difference, too. It should not be a surprise to anyone that products high in sugar, like regular soda and fruit juice with added sugar can contribute greatly to the problem if consumed in large amounts.
