Amid COVID-19 case resurgence, a California restaurant owner is planning on spending thousands of dollars on COVID-19 vaccine incentives.
Terri Stark, owner of Stark Reality Restaurants in Sonoma County, wants to increase the percentage of employees that are fully vaccinated at her restaurants. Currently, 85% of the 475-person workforce are vaccinated, however, Stark believes she can inspire more to receive the shot.
"Obviously we want to get to 100%, or get as close as we can," she told KCBS Radio. "What we’re doing is a vaccine lottery."
About $21,000 in prepaid gift cards will be spread across Stark’s seven restaurants, allotting three $1,000 gift cards per restaurant.
Vaccinated employees will be entered into the lottery for a chance to win a gift card on Sep. 1.
In the weeks before the winners are drawn, Stark is hopeful that her staff will feel motivated to get a vaccination.
"We’ll make appointments for them, we’ll drive them to their appointment, we’ll bring them back to work or home or wherever they need to go," she said. She even plans to meet with each of the holdouts individually to encourage them to get vaccinated.
It is her belief that the lottery style giveaway will be more effective than a mandate.
"We’re just trying to do our part," Stark said.
