Snacks go driverless: PepsiCo launches autonomous fleet

Frito Lay's, Doritos and more heading to Walmart, Dollar General without a driver

PepsiCo is operating a larger fleet of fully autonomous delivery trucks than Tesla’s current unsupervised robotaxi operation in Texas, highlighting the rapid real-world rollout of self-driving freight technology.

PepsiCo and Gatik have formed a strategic partnership to introduce autonomous freight into PepsiCo's North America food and beverage supply chain, marking the largest commercial autonomous freight deployment to date.

Launching where Gatik already has a fleet, PepsiCo's driverless operation is in Texas, Arizona, and Arkansas.

The snack and beverage giant has deployed 41 driverless box trucks. That number means in Texas they're already operating a larger fleet of fully autonomous delivery trucks than Tesla’s robotaxi operation in Texas.

And together, these two major projects highlight the rapid real-world rollout of self-driving freight technology.

For PepsiCo, medium-duty Isuzu trucks, many delivering Doritos and other Frito-Lay products, have been running with no human on board since June 2025 on fixed short-haul routes between distribution centers, bottling plants, and stores such as Walmart and Dollar General.

PepsiCo reports zero accidents and a 99% on-time performance rate after accounting for weather and traffic variables.

By comparison, Tesla’s unsupervised robotaxi fleet in Texas stands at roughly 29 to 42 vehicles operating primarily in Austin, with smaller numbers in Houston and Dallas as of early June 2026. The contrast comes as both companies push autonomous technology into everyday commercial use, with PepsiCo’s trucks already handling real supply chain deliveries at scale.

The Gatik-powered trucks focus on repeatable, lower-speed routes ideal for automation, freeing human drivers for higher-value tasks.

The deployment marks one of the largest commercial autonomous freight operations in the U.S. and underscores North Texas’s growing role as a testing ground for self-driving vehicles. No injuries or incidents have been reported in connection with PepsiCo’s driverless fleet.
