Torrential storms Saturday night set a record for the city's wettest hour and left several roads from Newark to Brooklyn inundated with water.
New York City recorded its wettest day since 2014 with 4.45 inches of rain falling in Central Park, according to the National Weather Service. Nearly 2 inches fell between 10 and 11 p.m., and an additional 1.84 inches fell from 11 p.m. to midnight.
The rainfall set off dangerous flooding in several streets and roadways in Brooklyn and Queens, and according to officials, one person was rescued from a vehicle by NYPD Emergency Service Unit.
Coastal areas of New Jersey were also under water as Henri edged closer Sunday morning.
Henri lost strength as it went above cooler waters around 7:30 a.m. Sunday and maximum winds were under 75 miles per hour, just shy of hurricane status.
Hurricane warnings in the area were canceled, but tropical storm warnings remained in effect from Long Island to southern New England.
