Police on Tuesday identified the suspect in the killing of 10 people at a Boulder, Colorado, supermarket as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21.
Officials say Alissa has been charged with 10 counts of murder in the first degree. Investigators do not yet know why he opened fire in the store.
Authorities also identified nine victims after previously identifying officer Eric Talley, 51, as one of the dead.
Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold identified the victims as Denny Strong, 20, Neven Stanisic, 23, Rikki Olds, 25, Tralona Bartkowiak, 49, Suzanne Fountain, 59, Terry Leiker, 51, Officer Eric Talley, 51, Kevin Mahoney, 61, Lynn Murray, 62, and Jody Waters, 65.
The Associated Press reports that a law enforcement official says the gunman used an AR-15 rifle and officials are still working to trace the weapon.
Police engaged in a shootout with the suspect inside the supermarket and that is when Officer Eric Talley was killed.
The shooting Monday at the crowded supermarket sent terrorized shoppers and workers scrambling for safety and stunned a state and a nation that has grieved several mass killings.
“My heart aches today, and I think all of ours does as Coloradans, as Americans,” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
The grocery store shooting took place less than a week after eight people were killed in a shooting spree in Georgia.
Both shootings have renewed calls by Democratic lawmakers to pass gun control measures.
Rep. Joe Neguse, a Democrat whose district includes Boulder, said Tuesday on “CBS This Morning” that “enough is enough” when it comes to political impasses that keep gun control laws from passing Congress.
“The time for inaction is over. It does not have to be this way. There are commonsense gun legislation reform proposals that have been debated in Congress for far too long," Neguse said. “The gun lobby and so many others have stopped the ability to make meaningful reforms in the past, but that’s no excuse. I think the American people are tired of excuses. So it’s time for us to roll up our sleeves in the Congress and muster the political will power to actually get something done.”
