The Best Restaurants Near Comerica Park and Ford Field

Comerica Park has some of the best concessions of any baseball stadium in the country, while Ford Field gets a little crazy with waffle tacos and loaded mashed potatoes. But it would still be foolish not to take advantage of downtown Detroit’s proliferous restaurants, sandwich counters and sports bars before or after a game. From the utter classic burger at Nemo’s to stylish new fried chicken inside a beer hall, here are the best places to eat near Comerica Park before or after a Tigers game.

Nothing like the Nemo Burger! Eat, Drink, Ride, Repeat!

Nemo’s

A legendary institution for pre- and post-game drinks at the old Tiger Stadium, Nemo’s still makes a great game day stop over in Corktown. Even as the neighborhood has developed around the old-school drinking hole, Nemo’s has remained the same, putting out the same classic burgers and beers for the last 50 years (ok, the bar did recently update their menu with more global offerings, but the burger is forever). Take advantage of the free parking, grab a bite, then hop on the shuttle over to the stadium.

Eastern Market Seafood Co.

One of our go-to haunts over in Eastern Market, this seafood restaurant boasts a surprisingly excellent lunch counter for meaty Old World sandwiches on the go. For a few bucks you can pick up a pocket-shaped sando stuffed with your choice of three worldly sausages, from kielbasa to andouille to red hots.

Penny Red’s and the Brakeman

Lou Whitaker and Alan Trammell have competition for all-time greatest Detroit duo. Penny Red’s and the Brakeman, the fried chicken window and the beer hall within the downtown Shinola hotel respectively, opened to great fanfare just before the 2019 baseball season. The purveyors of buckets of birds and beers provide a perfect place to hang in the afternoon before an evening game, or a place to unwind after a heated weekend bout. Just don’t expect to pop in and out; there tends to be a wait at this trendy spot.

Bert's Marketplace

There’s baseball in the summer and football in the fall, but the one throughline is a plate of ribs over at Bert’s. The outdoor smoker at this Eastern Market soul food icon turns out some of the best meats in the city, and it’s as good a reason as any to hang around the area after the final pitch of a summer baseball game. Once the weather turns chilly in the fall, head inside for a range of comforting soul fare. Opt for any of the sandwiches or combos with sides, including slabs from the smoker named for iconic jazz figures like Dizzie Gillespie and Etta James.

American Coney Island

No matter the day or time, no matter how energetically victorious or downtrodden you are coming off the game, no matter if you even really want to eat or not, American Coney Island will be there for you. The century old institution is open 24 hours a day, providing chili-doused Coney Dogs to Detroit’s weary just 10 minutes from Comerica and Ford Field. Get one before the game, get one after the game, heck -- leave the stadium during a slump and be back in your seat with a chili dog just in time for a comeback rally.
