Where to Eat Near the Superdome

A game at the Superdome is more than just an invitation to New Orleans; it’s an excuse to stuff yourself with the edible joy that fills the city’s plates and glasses. Picking from NOLA’s vast culinary options can be intimidating, so keep it simple on game day by eating near the stadium. Here are our favorite restaurants close to the Superdome.

Heard Dat Kitchen

For a truly on-theme meal, eat the “Superdome” at Heard Dat before going to the actual Superdome. One of the signature dishes of the Creole-style soul food restaurant, the plate comes brimming with blackened fish, lobster potatoes, lobster cream sauce, sweet corn and onion rings. The heap of food may not resemble the stadium in looks, but it gets the generous spirit of New Orleans just right.

Manning’s

Saints fans will feel right at home at Manning’s, with pictures of Archie Manning (and other, lesser, non-Saint Mannings) lining the walls. The Manning theme carries over into the menu, with a burger to represent each football family member, and the food beyond that is as solid as bar grub comes.

Herbsaint

Those with a little time and cash to spare before or after a game should spend it at Herbsaint, where Donald Link made a name for himself in the NOLA food scene and earned a James Beard award in the process. The classic French and Italian-inflected restaurant feels classy without edging into snooty, and it remains one of the city’s culinary gems. Early in the NFL season, grab a seat outside if the weather allows.

The Company Burger

The closest decent burger to the Superdome lives at Company Burger. The place does right by the classic single or double burger, which you can load up with bacon and a fried egg, or swap with lamb or turkey. A decent tap list and soft serve ought to keep you entertained until game time. Keep an eye out for weekly special burgers as well.

Compère Lapin

If you’re staying at the Old 77 Hotel (one of our favorite places to put up visitors when they come in for a game), then you can stroll down to Compère Lapin at any hour. This isn’t your average hotel restaurant, though. Chef Nina Compton has created Caribbean-Italian fusion that feels entirely New Orleanian, a feat worth tasting for yourself. Curried goat and jerk chicken sit alongside scialatielli and “dirty” arancini in mojo, and the excellent drinks list will have you feeling good after a game no matter who won.

Little Gem Saloon

For a late-night show after the main event, go directly from the Superdome to Little Gem, an old school spot for New Orleans jazz since the days of Jelly Roll Morton. Plan ahead and book your table because shows do sell out. You’ll be rewarded with NOLA classics like oysters en brochette and fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade.
